I first read September in 1991, shortly after having been diagnosed with breast cancer. Realizing that my personal situation had an influence on my rather shocked reaction to the story, I set it aside to perhaps read again sometime in the future. And 29 years later, I took September down from my “read again someday shelf”, and began to read. This time I was able to fully appreciate the fine writing, the intricate, intertwined storyline and the beautifully developed characters, all of whom came to life for me once again. The older, wiser, cancer survivor “me”, had a new appreciation for September...this book, like me, has aged pretty darn well. I loved this book for one simple reason: It was a respite. This family saga taking place in a small village in Scotland in the late 20th century took me out of the scary, tumultuous times in which we are now living in 2020. Rosamunde Pilcher's soothing words transported me to a time and place far, far away (OK—not that far, far away, but far enough) with characters whose "problems" did not involve wearing masks just to buy milk. This is literary ChickLit at its finest. It is the interwoven stories of several families living in the village of Strathcroy, Scotland. Centered upon a big dance that will happen in September, each family's little dramas and secrets are gradually revealed until the climactic ending. There is Alexa, the 21-year-old daughter who is living with a man she met only two months ago; the nearly perfect—but suddenly troubled—marriage of Edmund and Virginia; the worries of 8-year-old Henry as he embarks on boarding school; the scandalous, fabulously rich, and very mysterious Pandora, who returns to Croy for the first time in two decades; Violet, the grandmother who worries about everyone; Verena and Angus, who are hosting the big dance for their daughter's 21st birthday; Edie, the faithful housemaid and companion who is enduring her own suffering; Lottie, the mentally unstable and evil woman who is almost witchlike in a haunting way; and Archie and Isobel, who valiantly try to maintain their ancestral manse despite a severe lack of money. The many (many!) descriptions of the landscape and village are quite detailed and at times overdone, but they give the reader a magnificent and distinct vision of the beautiful Scottish countryside. While it's not a page-turner, this well-written novel is quite endearing and a real pleasure to read. It's the literary equivalent of a nice cup of tea with a freshly baked scone. Soothing and delicious.
